WFMW ~ Christmas traditions

graphics_01.gifEven thought my sweet friend, Amy, has done this for years, I just sparked the idea last year. I took each boy to the dollar store and let each of them pick out a gift for our family members. It brought such joy to me to see how creative and carefully they each took to pick out the special gift for each person. They each got a hold of a  shopping cart and went shopping. For instance, one of the boys bought my mom a shower cap since she always wears one in the shower. One of the other boys picked out a small skillet because Grandmas specialty was scrambled eggs when they visit her. The best one yet was a dish scrub brush for my BIL because my ds thought that he needed to start helping my sister with the dishes. LOL! It was such a blessing to me last year. I can’t wait to do it again this year. Beware! This is not a quick trip to the dollar store. So be prepared to be patient.

The Second tradition I want to try this year is to wrap 24 Christmas books and place them under the tree. Each night before bed during the month of December, I will have one boy pick and unwrap a book. On Christmas day we will read the best book of them ~ The bible. Of course, I don’t have 24 Christmas books, so I will be getting some from the library today.

  1. Those are both great traditions. I am going to have to try them. Thanks

  2. Hi! What great ideas! We are doing the book one also – I can’t wait for December to get here so we can start reading. 🙂 Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

  3. My older sis does this with her kids and this year I am going to let Claire do it, too (the shopping) the book idea is awesome! I will have to talk to Charlie about that one, it sounds like a great idea! And, I wanted to tell you that I went to copy off my gravy recipe for my cousin the other day and noticed that I forgot to put the flour on the recipe, so I am sorry if you couldn’t make it! It’s 1/4 cup if you still want to know. I can’t believe that I did that! I feel so dumb! lol.

    Have a Merry Christmas, Jill!

  4. I’ve been thinking that 3 is old enough to choose Dollar Store presents but not until closer to Christmas since I don’t think that 3 is old enough to keep silent about surprises particularly well. ;+) We’re going to do the book-thing, too. I have to pack the first 8 on a trip but we’ll appreciate them on the ride home (or so I tell myself).

  5. What a great idea! I love the dollar store idea. i think it’s great to show them that you can give great, thoughtful gifts to people without spending a fortune. I also like the book idea…perfect! Our Christmas tradition centers around the tv and watching some good quality classics, something that appeases the kids, adults, and the elders. It’s a great trip down memory lane. I just found this great limited edition dvd box set with all of the classics on it: Frosty, Rudolph, Santa Claus, Drummer Boy, etc. It’s called The Original Christmas Classics, and it even comes with a bonus CD for sitting back and enjoying some eggnog and music. Check it out: I am working to support this because I think it’s cost-effective, fun, enjoyable, and focuses on the most important thing: good, clean, family fun focusing on togetherness. What are your other traditions?
